Domed Cities

Houston Dome

Wouldn’t it be great to have future cities covered in domes? Rain will no longer spoil outdoor plans. The Sun’s harmful rays will be blocked. Temperatures will be more livable. Snow shoveling and ice creating hazardous conditions will be things of the past.

Farfetched, right? The idea of domed cities have been reserved for sci-fi fantasies and dreams of Walt Disney’s EPCOT city, but back in 2009 The Discovery Channel ran a segment of its series “Mega Engineering” on the possibility of a dome covering Houston.

The Houston Dome surface area will stretch over 21 million sq ft, which will make it the biggest structure with the largest roof in the world. The dome’s panels will be 15 ft across, with over 147,000 to cover the city of Houston.

Made with a new super lightweight but strong plastic, the structure will be able to withstand up to Category-5 hurricanes.

Crazy idea? Yes.
